Vioxx Recall

vioxx lawsuit

Merck announced the Vioxx recall on September 30, 2004 after results from a company study indicated Vioxx elevated the risk of heart attack and stroke.

A study involving more than 2,600 people showed that those taking Vioxx were at more than double the risk of suffering a serious cardiovascular injury, including heart attack and stroke.

Vioxx came under scrutiny almost immediately after its introduction to the market in 1999. In 2000, another Merck study indicated Vioxx patients suffered heart attacks at a rate more than five times greater than those taking naproxen. Not only did Merck refuse to issue a Vioxx recall, the company aggressively defended the safety of Vioxx and continued an aggressive marketing effort.

After issuing a the voluntary recall in September 2004, company officials toyed with idea of lifting the withdrawal and reintroducing the drug.

Vioxx Linked to Increased Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke

Data suggests that Vioxx can increase the risk of serious heart problems, and Vioxx users may be at a greater risk of suffering a heart attack. Merck & Co. conducted a study to determine if Vioxx could be used in the treatment of cancer. Three years into the study, it became apparent to researchers that those participants taking Vioxx were at a significantly greater risk of suffering from cardiovascular problems.

Merck & Co. knew of problems related to the drug back in 2002, when another study it conducted indicated an increased risk of heart problems. The company ignored that warning and continued marketing the drug for the treatment of arthritis pain.

If you or a loved one has used Vioxx, promptly consult your doctor for an evaluation.
